Stress Management Through Movement for Women’s Hormonal Health

When a woman experiences chronic stress, cortisol levels can exceed their normal parameters and duration. This excess cortisol triggers a cascade effect on other hormones, potentially leading to a prolonged state of hormonal imbalance. Interestingly, while exercise itself acts as a stressor, it also serves as a potent stress reliever. This session delves into understanding the intricate workings of the female hormonal system, exploring how stress impacts it, the role of exercise in either exacerbating or alleviating this imbalance, and the profound effects of managing chronic stress through movement in female clients.

Learning Outcomes:

  1. Revisiting Hormonal Dynamics: Refresh your understanding of the key hormones governing the menstrual cycle and menopause.
  2. Decoding Cortisol: Explore the nuances of cortisol—from its healthy production to its functions, its interactions with other hormones, and its receptors on cellular levels.
  3. Breaking the Cycle: Grasp how hormonal dysfunction operates in a feedback loop and discover how targeted exercise prescriptions can interrupt this cycle rather than perpetuate it.
  4. Recognizing Red Flags: Learn to identify signs of hormonal imbalance that warrant medical attention, and understand when and why it’s crucial to refer clients to their healthcare providers.
  5. Strategies for Movement: Discover practical adjustments to training regimens that can effectively disrupt or mitigate the chronic stress cycle, promoting holistic well-being in female clients.

By unpacking these insights, fitness professionals can enhance their ability to support women in managing their hormonal health through informed exercise strategies.

Course Description

When a female body is chronically stressed, cortisol is released over and above it’s normal ranges and time span. There’s a “downstream” effect on other hormones, and a state of chronic hormonal imbalance can develop. Exercise is another form of stress, but it is also another form of stress relief. This session aims to deliver the trainer a basic understanding of the female hormonal system and how stress affects it, how exercise can increase or decrease this imbalance, and the powerful side effects of managing chronic stress through movement in our female clients.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Refresh your learning on the primary hormones involved menstrual cycle and menopause
  • Dive in to cortisol – when it’s healthy, what it’s function is, how it’s made, it’s relationship with other hormones and hormone receptors on the cells
  • Understand the basics in how hormone dysfunction is a circular feedback loop and how your movement prescription can break the cycle rather than feeding it
  • Get the red flags of hormone imbalance, when and why to refer to their GP
  • What kinds of movement and tweaks to your training can break or mitigate the chronic stress cycle
