Osteoporosis and Your Female Client

Osteoporosis literally means ‘bones with holes’; it is a condition where bones become thin, weak and fragile. Once in this condition, a minor bump or accident can lead to fracture, chronic pain, disability and even premature death. Osteopenia, or low bone density, is a condition when bone mineral density is lower than normal but not low enough to be classified as osteoporosis1.

Of 10 million Americans who have Osteoporosis right now, 80% of them are women2. In Australia, 29% of women over 75 have osteoporosis compared to 10% of men.

In this session you can expect to:

  • Gain an understanding of what Osteoporosis is.
  • Understand how Osteoporosis affects your female clients – not just the post menopausal ones.
  • Learn the risk factors for Osteoporosis, and how to avoid the ones that are possible to control.
  • Gain some tools in Osteoporosis prevention within your Scope of Practise to prescribe movement to women.
  • Understand how to modify exercise when Osteoporosis has been diagnosed.

We will also spend some time looking at how IntoYou approached the diagnosis of Osteoporosis in one of our real life clients.
