Course Description
A CDC article on Alcohol Abuse and Women and Girls found that alcohol abuse is a women’s health issue1. Although men are still more likely to drink alcohol and consume larger amounts, biological differences in a woman’s body structure and chemistry lead them to absorb more alcohol and take longer to metabolize it. After drinking the same amount of alcohol, women tend to have higher blood alcohol levels than men, and the immediate effects of alcohol usually occur more quickly and last longer. These differences make women more susceptible to the long-term negative health effects of alcohol compared with men, including liver disease, brain and breast cancers2.
Learning Outcomes:
- Understand what a healthy consumption of alcohol is for women.
- Learn about why alcohol affects women differently.
- Grasp some of the issues around alcohol consumption that are unique to women.
- Learn the signs and symptoms of an alcohol use disorder
- Meet a client who needed a whole social group change to cut her drinking down, and explore how we did it!
